Apple Pie Pinwheels

This sweet pinwheel is quick to whip together for baby weaning, picnics and snack time. This has no added sugar, as the sweetness comes from the apple and can be really easily adapted to include other soft fruits as well as other toppings- I often add crushed pecans to this for example (just be mindful with allergies).

Makes: ~15

Prep: 10 Mins + Cooling Time

Cooking Time: 25 Mins

Ready In: 35 Mins

  • Ready Rolled Puff Pastry (or GF Puff Pastry)
  • 2 Cooking Apples
  • Cinnamon (light sprinkle)
  • ~20g Butter or Butter Equivalent, melted
  1. Stew the apple to make an apple sauce by peeling and coring the cooking apples and roughly chopping them. Add them to a small saucepan along with a splash of water and a light sprinkle of ground cinnamon. Pop the lid on and bring to a simmer and cook for 5-10 minutes, or until the apple is cooked and soft. Mash with the back of a fork and put to one side to cool.
  2. Preheat the oven to 200C/ 180C Fan/ Gas 6.
  3. Unroll your puff pastry. Spread a thin layer of the apple puree over the top. Rolling the long length, roll the pinwheels into a tight spiral and then slice into thin rounds around 1-1.5cm thick- you should get ~15
  4. Place your pinwheels onto a baking sheet lined with baking parchment leaving a gap between them (they will grow in the oven). Brush with some melted butter and then pop in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  5. Cool on a cooling rack before serving, or keep in an airtight container for 48 hours.
