Yuk Sung

This amazing Chinese dish is served in lettuce cups and makes a great, sociable meal to enjoy with the family at the weekend. This is one of my favourite things to order from the Chinese takeaway down the road and during the covid lockdowns I decided to try and make my own- I also had a weaning infant at home so this also meant I could make something we could all enjoy and have greater control over the salt content.

Serves: 4-6

Prep: 15-20 mins

Cooking Time: 25 mins

Ready in: 45 mins

  • 1tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 500g minced pork or turkey
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 1 thumb sized piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 tbsp Chinese 5 spice
  • 150g carrot, diced
  • 150g mushrooms, diced
  • 140g water chestnuts, diced
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce
  • Baby Gem Lettuce

Optional:

  • 1-2 red chillies
  • 4 spring onions
  • 2 gherkins, finely diced

  1. In a large pan fry the onion & pork for 3-4 minutes in the vegetable oil.
  2. Add the garlic, ginger, Chinese 5 spice and cook for 2 minutes. Add the carrot and mushrooms and stir-fry for a further 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add the dark and light soy sauce and oyster sauce. Turn the heat down and cook for 10 minutes, stirring regularly. Add the water chestnuts for the last couple of minutes to warm through.
  4. Serve in the lettuce leaves topped with any of the optional extras. I also recommend serving with egg-fried rice to make it a more balanced meal.

Additional Information

If you are serving this to weaning infants, at the end of step 2 put a small amount to one side in a small pan and continue to cook separately until the carrots are soft- you may like to do this by adding a splash of water and popping a lid on and steaming the mix. This means they enjoy the same meal without the salty sauce!
