Chia Seed Jam

This chia seed jam is an excellent way of reducing your sugar, adding a source of omega 3 and increasing your fibre intake! Typically jams are very high in sugar- both from the fruit and from the sugar added in. This recipe only uses the natural sugars from the fruit (and maple syrup if you decide to add it in). The chia seeds thicken the jam as well as providing excellent nutritional benefits such as omega-3 fatty acids and being a good source of fibre.

Makes: ~450g Jam

Prep: 5 Mins

Cooking Time: 10 Mins

Ready In: 15 Mins

  • 500g Frozen Fruit (I like to use mixed berries)
  • 1tsp Vanilla Essence
  • Juice of Lime or Lemon
  • 3tbsp Chia Seeds
  • Optional: Maple Syrup to taste
  1. Place the frozen fruit in a saucepan, along with the vanilla essence and lemon or lime juice.
  2. Bring to the boil then reduce to a simmer until the fruit is soft- this should take no more than 10 minutes but will vary on the fruit used.
  3. Mash the fruit mixture to get rid of any large lumps (especially is using strawberries). Then mix in the chia seed. If you feel like the jam is too tart (this will depend on the berries used) then add a small amount of maple syrup at this stage to sweeten.
  4. Decant into a jar and leave to cool before storing in the fridge for up to a week.
