Sausage Rolls

You can't beat making your own sausage rolls at home- they are fun to do with the kids and great if you are catering for a birthday party or play date.

  • Pack Ready-Rolled Puff Pastry (320g)
  • 600g Sausage Meat (this is ~9 shop-bought sausages, skin removed, if you can't get just the meat)
  • 1 Egg (for egg wash)
  • Optional: Chutney (I would recommend caramalised onion)
  • Optional: Poppy and/or Sesame Seeds
  1. Preheat the oven to 220C/ 200C Fan/ Gas 7
  2. Roll out the pull pastry and divide lengthways (longest way) in half. Optional Step: Spread over a thin layer of chutney
  3. Divide the sausage meat into half, and roll each into a sausage shape the same length as the half of the puff pastry. Place the 2 rolls of sausage into the middle of each half of pastry.
  4. Roll up the pastry so that it completely covers the sausage, pressing together the 2 edges to seal it. Place the seal at the bottom so that it cannot be seen.
  5. Slice each half into 6-12 pieces depending on what size sausage roll you want. With a sharp knife score lines into the pastry, then brush with egg wash. As an optional step, top with sesame and/or poppy seeds
  6. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes, or until golden and cooked through

Additional Information

Get creative with the fillings of these- this is just a basic recipe, but work with your kids on what flavours you can create- you could go classic and simple for example- with some onions or caramalised onion chutney- or you could go fancy- for example adding in some pear and stilton.
