Pesto & Cheese Straws

These are ideal for lunches at any age (6 months plus) and super easy to make. These are cheese and pesto flavoured, but you can obviously do a variety of flavour combinations- in the past I have done marmite, parma ham, tomato puree, and mustard to name a few!

Makes: ~15 Cheese Straws

Prep: 10 Mins

Cooking Time: 20 Mins

Ready In: 30 Mins

  • 1 Pack Ready Rolled Puff Pastry
  • Pesto (~ 2 tbsp but spread a thin layer to taste)
  • Cheddar Cheese (measure with your heart, just grate over enough to cover half the pastry)
  • 1 Egg, whisked
  1. Preheat the oven to 180CFan/200C/ Gas 6
  2. Unroll the ready rolled puff pastry, spread the pesto over half of the pastry and then top with grated cheese.
  3. Fold over the other half of the pastry to sandwich the filling and slightly press down.
  4. Cut the pastry into thin strips, between 1-2cm wide. Twist each strip of pastry to create a spiral, Then place on a lined baking tray. brush with The egg wash and bake for 15-20mins minutes or until golden brown.

Additional Information

You can easily twist these into a rough 'bunny' shape- simply twist as usual then fold over to create a small loop with two 'ears' at the top. I have a video on how to do this on my Instagram page should you want to look at a 'how to' example.

Please note that this recipe does contain a couple of common allergens; wheat, dairy and nuts (in the pesto). Please ensure you introduce these individually before giving these to a weaning infant.
